DELVALLE, ARTURO (1937- ). The only Jew ever elected head of state in the Western Hemisphere. Member of the old Spanish-Portuguese Jewish community of Panama (see Curaçao), he became president of Panama in 1985. In 1988, he tried to dismiss dictator Raul Noriega and had to flee the country until 1989 when the U.S. ousted Noriega.
