AUSCHWITZ. Town in southwestern Poland where the Germans in World War II maintained the most gruesome of all the concentration camps. Four million inmates, mostly Jews, were exterminated by gas, phenol injections, shooting, hanging, hunger, and disease. (See also Holocaust.)
