COLOMBIA. Republic in northwestern South America. Marranos—converted Jews who practiced the faith of their fathers in secret—lived in Colombia during the 16th and 17th centuries. Their community was suppressed by the Inquisition established in 1910. During the 1850’s Sephardic Jews from Curacao settled in Colombia. They were joined by immigrants from Greece, Romania, and Turkey after World War I, and by refugees from Germany and East Europe during the 1930’s. Colombia, whose total population in 1998 was 35.6 million, is the home of 4,000 Jews, most of whom live in the cities of Bogota, Baranquilla, Cali, Cartagena, and Medellin. Each of these has its own synagogues, religious schools, and charitable organizations.
